The Legend of Laughing Louie
By: Warren Searle, Kings County Record, Special Projects Team
I sat in Silence overlooking Walton Lake on the Kingston Peninsula just as I had done more than 40 years ago. The log beneath me was hardly the one that I rested on while supervising a group of neighbourhood boys on a weekend camping trip, but it was very near the same spot. The ghost was there alright, I could feel him in a way that only those who had experienced the same phenomenon could understand. In death he was laughing at us mortals in the same way that he laughed at us in life. Allow me to introduce you to an old acquaintance, “Laughing Louie,” the Indian.
To all the residents of Kings County and beyond who are 40 years or more, no introduction is necessary because everybody knew him or knew of him.
Dave Ward Lake Memorial
SVAT Trail # 3411
Sussex Valley All-Terrain Club and the Province of New Brunswick have teamed up to erect a monument commemorating the life and death of Forest Ranger David Malcolm Ward. Back on January 7th, 1966, David Malcolm Ward was scaling logs for a private company (a common practice back then) to determine the scale of logs that would eventually determine the worth of the logs. The logger took issue with the scale that he received for the logs and an argument took place which resulted in David Ward being struck in the head with a blunt object. He was transported to hospital however passed away enroute just outside Hampton, N.B. His wife, Donna, who were married for less than two years, was with him in the ambulance when he died. Both he and Donna were active members in the community of Sussex where they made their home and were Wolf Cub leaders.
